Yes. All our products are handmade. Rannscape Weaves works with master weavers, block-printers and artisan communities in Kutch. Our textiles are made using traditional handcraft and handloom techniques, including traditional pit-loom weaving and hand-carved block printing. Each piece reflects the skills and knowledge of the artisans involved in its making.
Rannscape Weaves products are made using traditional handcraft and handloom techniques. Slight variations in colour, weave, texture, slubs, irregularities and finish may occur from one piece to another. These variations are a natural part of the handmade process. Each piece is unique, and these subtle differences are part of the character and authenticity of a handcrafted textile.
No. Natural irregularities and subtle variations in colour, weave, texture, slubs, pattern and finish are inherent to handcrafted and handwoven production and are not considered defects. These characteristics reflect the individuality of each piece and the traditional processes used to create it.
Product Care
To keep your handloom pieces soft, smooth and comfortable for years to come, we recommend following the care instructions on the care label attached to your garment. As a general guide, hand-wash or use a gentle machine cycle with cold water, use a very mild liquid detergent, avoid harsh chemicals, dry in the shade, and store your pieces in a cool, dry place.
Dry cleaning is highly recommended for the first wash to help set the colours and preserve the intricate weft work. For subsequent washes, hand-washing is recommended. Alternatively, you can use a gentle machine cycle with cold water. Use a very mild liquid detergent or baby shampoo, and do not soak the fabric for more than 5 minutes. Avoid bleaching, scrubbing, wringing or twisting the fabric.
Yes. If you choose to machine wash your Kala Cotton textile, use a gentle machine cycle with cold water and a very mild liquid detergent or baby shampoo. Hand-washing is recommended to help preserve the fabric’s integrity.
We recommend hand-washing your handwoven textiles to preserve the fabric’s integrity. If necessary, you can use a gentle machine cycle with cold water
Always air-dry your handwoven textiles in the shade. Avoid direct sunlight, as this can affect colour vibrancy and the natural fibres. After washing, gently comb tassels with your fingers to prevent them from tangling.
Yes. For best results, iron the garment while it is still slightly damp, using low to medium heat. For delicate fabrics, place a thin cotton cloth between the iron and the garment. It is also safer to iron on the reverse side to protect raised weaving patterns. Avoid using starch or heavy sizing.
Store your handwoven textiles in a cool, dry place. Avoid plastic covers and instead use the breathable muslin or cotton cloth bag provided with the product. Avoid hanging your textiles for long periods; folding them helps maintain the shape of the handloom weave.
Treat Ajrakh textiles with the same care recommended for our handloom pieces. For the first wash, dry cleaning is recommended. For subsequent washes, hand-washing is recommended using cold water and a very mild liquid detergent or baby shampoo. Avoid soaking for more than 5 minutes, and do not bleach, scrub, wring or twist the fabric. Wash dark and light colours separately and always dry in the shade.
Naturally dyed fabrics may bleed slightly during the first few washes. This is completely normal. Since we use natural, azo-free dyes, we recommend washing dark and light-coloured garments separately to help prevent colour transfer. Drying in the shade helps preserve colour vibrancy.
Yes. One of the qualities of genuine handwoven textiles is that they become softer and more comfortable with every wash and wear. New handwoven fabric can feel slightly crisp when it is fresh off the loom. With a gentle first wash, the weave relaxes and the fabric gradually develops a softer, more comfortable feel.
All Rannscape Weaves products are pre-washed before shipment, so you should not experience unexpected shrinkage.
Handwoven textiles naturally have variations in texture and colour because of the traditional handloom and handcrafted processes used to make them. These variations are part of the character and authenticity of a handcrafted textile.
Handle your textiles gently and follow the care instructions on the garment’s care label. We recommend hand-washing where possible, using a very mild detergent, avoiding harsh chemicals, bleaching, scrubbing, wringing and twisting, and drying in the shade. Store your pieces in a cool, dry place in a breathable muslin or cotton bag, and avoid hanging them for long periods.
Kala Cotton
Kala Cotton is a short-staple, indigenous cotton native to the Kutch region of Gujarat. It is adapted to the region’s dry landscape and irregular rainfall and has been cultivated there for generations.
Kala Cotton comes from the Kutch region of Gujarat, India, where it has been cultivated for generations.
Yes. Kala Cotton is an indigenous fibre native only to the Kutch region.
Kala Cotton has evolved to thrive in the dry landscape of Kutch and its irregular rainfall. It is rain-fed and traditionally grown without synthetic fertilisers and chemical pesticides. Its short fibre also gives the finished fabric a distinctive texture, with subtle slubs that are part of its character.
Kala Cotton is adapted to the natural conditions of Kutch and is rain-fed, requiring no irrigation. It is traditionally grown without synthetic fertilisers and chemical pesticides and uses minimal water at the growing stage. It represents an older way of working with the land rather than against it.
Kala Cotton is an indigenous, non-GMO cotton traditionally grown in Kutch, Gujarat, using rain-fed farming methods and without synthetic pesticides or chemical fertilisers. It is considered one of the most eco-friendly and chemical-free textile fibres available in India.
While Kala Cotton is grown using organic farming practices, not all Kala Cotton is third-party certified organic. This is because much of it is cultivated by smallholder, rain-fed farmers for whom certifications such as GOTS can be difficult and costly to obtain.
Yes. Kala Cotton is entirely rain-fed and grows with the region’s natural rainfall.
No. Kala Cotton is adapted to the dry landscape of Kutch and is rain-fed, requiring no irrigation.
Kala Cotton is traditionally grown without synthetic fertilisers and chemical pesticides.
Kala Cotton is an indigenous, short-staple cotton adapted to the dry landscape of Kutch. Unlike conventional cotton, it is rain-fed and traditionally grown without synthetic fertilisers and chemical pesticides. It requires no irrigation and uses minimal water at the growing stage.
Kala Cotton has a distinctive, naturally textured feel. Its short-staple fibre produces characterful slubs and subtle irregularities, giving the fabric a tactile quality that reflects both the fibre and the handwoven process.
Yes. Kala Cotton is breathable, making it comfortable across different seasons.
Kala Cotton is breathable and thermally adaptive, and is described as being cool in heat and warm in cooler months. Its suitability for a specific climate may also depend on the particular textile and weave.
Yes. Kala Cotton is thermally adaptive, making it cool in heat and warm in cooler months. This makes it genuinely wearable across seasons.
Kala Cotton is a short-staple fibre, and its natural characteristics produce subtle slubs and irregularities in the finished fabric. These are a natural part of the fibre and are part of its character, rather than defects.
Rannscape Weaves creates handwoven Kala Cotton textiles, with weavers using traditional pit looms.
The cotton is first hand-picked and cleaned of seed and debris. It then goes through carding and spinning, transforming the fibre into yarn. The yarn is prepared for weaving through warping, where individual threads are aligned and tensioned across the loom. The artisan then weaves the yarn on a traditional pit loom, carefully controlling tension, rhythm and structure as the textile takes shape.
Handwoven Kala Cotton textiles require significantly more time, skill and human involvement than machine-made textiles. Power looms use electricity to produce large quantities of uniform fabric, whereas our Kala Cotton is woven manually on traditional pit looms by skilled artisans who may produce only a few metres of fabric a day.
The time required to make a piece can vary considerably depending on its design and level of detail. A handwoven saree, for example, can take anywhere from a few days to several months to complete.
The price also reflects the value of the people and communities behind the textile. At Rannscape Weaves, our work directly supports fair and sustainable livelihoods for artisan families and smallholder farmers in Kutch, Gujarat, while helping keep traditional weaving heritage alive.
Handwoven Kala Cotton also has qualities that distinguish it from machine-made fabric. Its natural weave creates micro-gaps that allow greater air circulation, giving the fabric its distinctive breathability and texture. With regular wear and gentle washing, the fabric becomes softer, stronger and more comfortable over time.
Handloom, Craft & Artisans
Handwoven means that a textile is created on a loom through the skilled work of an artisan, rather than being produced entirely by a machine. At Rannscape Weaves, our artisans work on traditional pit looms, carefully managing the tension, rhythm and structure of the cloth by hand. Each thread is placed and interlaced with care as the textile takes shape.
Our textiles begin with Kala Cotton, which is hand-picked and cleaned before being carded and spun into yarn. The yarn is then prepared for weaving through warping, where individual threads are aligned and tensioned across the loom. Our artisans weave the yarn on traditional pit looms, adjusting tension, rhythm and structure by hand. Where Ajrakh is part of a textile, hand-carved wooden blocks are applied in a precise sequence, with stages of mordanting, dyeing, washing and drying building the pattern layer by layer.
Bhujodi is a weaving tradition associated with the Bhujodi area of Kutch, Gujarat, where weaving communities have practised handloom weaving across generations. Rannscape Weaves works with weaving communities rooted in and around Bhujodi and the wider Kutch region.
Our textiles are made in Kutch, Gujarat, working directly with master weavers and artisan communities in and around Bhujodi, and Ajrakh block printers in the village of Ajrakhpur.
Rannscape Weaves products are made by a network of weavers, dyers, block-printers, farmers and artisan communities in Kutch, Gujarat. We think of these people as collaborators and co-creators, whose knowledge, patience and skills shape what we make.
Handwoven textiles are made through a slower, highly skilled process that involves multiple stages, from preparing the fibre and yarn to preparing the loom and weaving the cloth. The time required varies depending on the textile and its complexity. Complex Ajrakh pieces, for example, can take several days to complete because each layer of the pattern requires mordanting, dyeing, washing and drying before the next can begin.
Handloom textiles are created by artisans using traditional looms, with the process requiring continuous attention to factors such as tension, rhythm and structure. Each textile is shaped by the artisan’s knowledge, experience and hands. Machine-made textiles are produced through mechanised processes, allowing them to be made faster and more uniformly.
Handwoven textiles involve significantly more time, skill and human involvement than machine-made textiles. At Rannscape Weaves, the process begins with the fibre and passes through multiple skilled stages, including spinning, yarn preparation, loom preparation and weaving. Each textile is shaped by the artisan’s knowledge, judgement, rhythm and hands, making the process slower and more involved than machine production.
Slight variations in colour, weave, texture, slubs, irregularities and finish may occur from one handwoven piece to another. These are a natural part of the handmade process and reflect the individuality of each textile. They are part of the character and authenticity of a handcrafted textile rather than defects.
We work directly with our artisan partners and view them as collaborators and co-creators, rather than makers simply executing a brief. Our artisans are involved from the early stages of product development, and their knowledge and experience actively contribute to what we make. We also value their understanding of fibres, yarns, techniques and construction when developing our textiles.
Yes. We work directly with artisan partners, without layers of contractors standing between the maker and the brand. Our artisan partners include weavers, dyers and block-printers from communities rooted in and around Bhujodi and the wider Kutch region.
Rannscape Weaves works directly with artisan partners and is committed to fair compensation and long-term relationships. By working directly with artisans and returning to the same weavers, dyers and printers season after season, we aim to support continuity, recognition and sustainable livelihoods within the local textile ecosystem.
Fair compensation is fundamental to how we work. Our direct relationships with artisan partners allow us to build relationships without layers of contractors standing between the maker and the brand.
The artisans we work with belong to weaving communities rooted in and around Bhujodi and the wider Kutch region. For many of these families, handloom weaving is not simply a skill acquired but one inherited, refined and passed down across generations.
Kutch has a long tradition of intricate embroidery, resist-dye block printing and sophisticated weaving. At Rannscape Weaves, we see the people who carry these traditions forward as collaborators and co-creators. Their knowledge, patience and experience actively shape the textiles we produce.
Rannscape Weaves believes traceability is a form of respect, not simply transparency. Where possible, every Rannscape piece can be traced back to the artisan who made it, and often to the village where it was created.
Sustainability & Ethical Practices
Yes. Sustainability is central to Rannscape Weaves. We work with indigenous Kala Cotton, Merino wool, traditional handloom techniques and artisan communities in Kutch, while focusing on responsible material choices, long-term craft practices and the preservation of local textile traditions.
Our approach to sustainability begins with working with what already exists. We use naturally available fibres such as indigenous Kala Cotton, Merino wool and Tussar silk, rather than synthetic or man-made fibres produced through industrial processes. We work with traditional handloom and handcrafted techniques, and use biodegradable dyes that are gentler on the environment. We also believe that supporting artisan communities, preserving traditional knowledge and creating textiles that are made to last are important parts of sustainable fashion.
Our textiles are rooted in the landscape and craft traditions of Kutch, Gujarat. Kala Cotton, the primary fibre used in our textiles, is indigenous to Kutch. We work directly with master weavers, block-printers and artisan communities in the region.
At Rannscape Weaves, we prioritise organic materials and low-impact production methods across our collections. Our primary fibre, Kala Cotton, is an indigenous, rain-fed cotton traditionally grown without synthetic fertilisers or chemical pesticides.
We also use azo-free dyes and focus on eco-conscious processes throughout the production journey, from the raw fibre through to finishing. These practices help minimise the environmental footprint of our textiles while preserving the natural qualities of the materials and traditional craft techniques we work with.
We do not currently carry GOTS certification. However, we believe that there is another form of accountability that is particularly meaningful to the way we work: we trace every piece back to the Kutchi artisan who made it.
GOTS is an internationally recognised certification that involves significant certification costs and is primarily designed for larger-scale, industrial textile operations. At Rannscape Weaves, we work differently. We source our textiles directly from smallholder craft farmers and partner with small-scale craft clusters rather than industrial operations.
Because of this direct model, we do not pass on the high cost of international certification fees. Instead, we choose to invest those resources into fair compensation for our weavers, sustainable practices and radical transparency across our supply chain.
At present, our products use azo-free dyes. Azo-free dyes are synthetic, lab-formulated dyes that do not contain azo compounds, which are aromatic compounds that can break down into potentially carcinogenic amines under certain conditions.
While they are not natural dyes, azo-free dyes are considered a safer alternative to conventional azo dyes. They allow handweavers to achieve more consistent colours across production while avoiding some of the more harmful compounds associated with conventional synthetic dyes. For us, this represents a balance between preserving the integrity of the craft and making our textiles practical to produce at scale.
While we will explore natural dyes in the future, our current collections use azo-free dyes.
We work with materials and processes that are suited to the landscape and traditional textile practices of Kutch. Kala Cotton is rain-fed and requires no irrigation, and is traditionally grown without synthetic fertilisers and chemical pesticides. Alongside Kala Cotton, we also work with naturally available fibres such as Merino wool and Tussar silk. We use traditional handloom techniques and natural, azo-free dyes as part of our approach to more responsible textile production.
Handwoven textiles are made through slower, more considered processes that rely on skilled artisans rather than entirely mechanised production. Choosing handwoven textiles supports traditional craft practices, artisan knowledge and textile systems that have been sustained across generations. Our focus on durable textiles also encourages a relationship with clothing that extends beyond a single season.
Slow fashion is an approach that values thoughtful production, craftsmanship, longevity and a more considered relationship between people, clothing and the environment. At Rannscape Weaves, we believe that textiles made slowly and with intention can create a different relationship between the maker and the person who wears them.
We prioritise direct relationships with our artisan partners, without layers of contractors standing between the maker and the brand. We are committed to fair compensation, long-term partnerships and traceability, allowing us to know who makes our textiles and understand the practices behind them.
For us, traceability is a form of respect, not simply transparency. Where possible, every Rannscape piece can be traced back to the artisan who made it, and often to the village where it was created. This allows us to maintain a closer connection between the textile, its maker and its place of origin.
Yes. Our textiles are designed to be durable and to be lived with over time. Our handwoven Kala Cotton, Merino wool and Tussar silk textiles are made with care and traditional techniques that contribute to their longevity.
