This is an authentic Kala Cotton Saree, handwoven by the master weavers of the Vankar community of a village named Bhujodi in the district of Kutch, Gujarat, India. The saree is distinguished by its intricate extra-weft weaving. This technique involves manually inserting contrasting treads during the weaving process to create the raised geometric patterns seen on the borders and pallu (end piece) representing a 500-year-old tradition of hand weaving.

The fabric is made from Kala Cotton, a resillient, Carbon-neutral, indigenous organic cotton variety native to the arid region of Kutch. It is known for its earthy, slightly coarse texture that softens beautifully with every wash.

This saree features a deep coal-black base that emphasizes the crisp, white extra-weft geometry. The saree is defined by its dramatic monochrome palette, accented with vibrant blue, red and green selvedges (borders). The body is adorned with traditional Kutchi motifs that appear like delicate embroidery but are actually woven directly into the fabric using the extra-weft technique. The texture is earthy and substantial, typical of authentic Kala cotton, making it an ideal choice for both formal gatherings and artisanal daily wear.

Motif and Design:

The motifs on this saree are symbolic of the Kutch landscape and community life:

  • The Pallu (Decorative End): The pallu is structured into architectural horizontal panels. It features prominent Golden Zari (Shimmer) Bands that catch the light, providing a luxurious contrast to the matte black cotton base. These metallic stripes are interspersed with traditional Landhar (zigzag) and Chaumukh (four-sided diamond) patterns, creating a rhythmic, high-contrast visual.

  • The Peacock Motifs (Mor): Symbolizing grace and the arrival of rain in the arid Kutch landscape. These motifs are rendered in a minimalist, geometric form characteristic of Bhujodi weaving, adding an element of nature-inspired artistry to the garment.

  • The Body (Buttis): The main drape is adorned with a sophisticated mix of a delicate "butti" pattern and Aabhla” (mirrors) Tiny, circular mirrors that resemble a starry night.

  • The Border: A multi-colored frame featuring Madder Red and Indigo Blue  and Green selvedges.

Finish: Hand-knotted white and black fringes at the pallu edge.
